FROM STARDUST TO GOD BLESS THE CHILD
DELICATE SINGER

One of the most interesting new voices in the vernacular scene, singer Ligia Piro will next Saturday perform a set of standards accompanied by guitar player Ricardo Lew, Guillermo Delgado on double-bass and Roberto Nuñez on drums.
The daughter of tangueros Susana Rinaldi and Osvaldo Piro, Ligia has been paving her way in the jazz field; her 2003 debut album, simply titled LP, showed her perfectly at home with old classics like Angel Eyes, Waltz for Debbie or Body and Soul; or with songs — classics, too — strongly associated with Billie Holiday: God Bless the Child, Don’t Explain and Speak Low. Although almost singers succumb to the allure of singing standards, doing so can be tricky.
The repertoire is over represented, and invariably invokes unfair comparisons. Ligia Piro, nevertheless, adds her own, new and fresh light to these old beautiful songs.

Saturday 11 at 10pm at Thelonious, Salguero 1884.
